Jaw Pain, Clicking & Locking: Care in Yelahanka

Understand the Areas We Assess

The Joint Sits Just in Front of the Ear
The jaw joint allows the lower jaw to rotate and slide. A painless click does not, by itself, establish a problem that needs treatment. Pain, recurrent locking or restricted opening deserves examination.

Muscles Help You Chew and Move the Jaw
Tender or fatigued chewing muscles may contribute to cheek or jaw discomfort. We check whether jaw use reproduces your familiar pain and consider habits and other factors.

Does Chewing or Clenching Affect Your Headache?
Chewing or clenching may influence some headaches, but headache and jaw pain can also coexist independently. Tell us about the pattern rather than assuming a dental cause.

Tooth Problems Need Their Own Checks
We check for dental problems and signs of wear. Tooth wear is not proof of current grinding, and a changed bite should be assessed before any permanent adjustment is proposed.
Teeth Grinding & Clenching (Bruxism)

Notice Clenching and Jaw Bracing
You may hold the teeth together or tense the jaw while concentrating or under stress. Awareness and individually guided habit changes may help reduce unnecessary jaw loading. You do not need to repeatedly test or force your jaw open.

Sleep Grinding Needs a Different Conversation
A partner may hear grinding, or you may notice morning discomfort. Neither morning pain nor tooth wear alone confirms sleep bruxism. Tell us about snoring, breathing pauses and daytime sleepiness as well.

Protection and Pain Relief Are Different Goals
An appropriately prescribed splint may protect tooth surfaces from direct contact. It does not guarantee that grinding stops or that jaw pain improves. Tooth wear can have other causes, including acid-related damage.

The Findings Decide the Next Step
We review symptoms, tooth wear, restorations, jaw function, medicines and relevant sleep or lifestyle factors. The plan may involve monitoring, habit support, dental protection or further review. Not everyone needs an appliance.
Your Visit and Care Plan
1 · Explain Your Symptoms
Tell us what hurts, whether the jaw clicks or locks, when it began and how eating or sleep is affected. Bring previous records and any night guard or splint.
2 · Check Movement, Muscles, Joints and Teeth
We assess your range of movement, tenderness and dental findings. Imaging is considered when it can answer a useful question; it is not required for every patient.
3 · Start With Appropriate Conservative Care
Depending on the findings, advice may include reducing aggravating jaw habits, guided exercises or physiotherapy and medicine where appropriate. Avoid forcing a painful or locked jaw.
4 · Review Before Adding Treatment
We review pain and function against agreed goals. An appliance or specialist procedure requires a clear reason, discussion of alternatives and an appropriate follow-up plan.

Questions About Jaw Pain
Can a Click Be Left Alone?
Often, yes, when it is painless and movement is normal. Arrange consultation for painful clicks, locking or restricted opening.
Is Jaw Pain Always Caused by Grinding?
No. Joint, muscle, dental and other conditions can cause similar symptoms. Grinding or clenching may be relevant without explaining everything.
Does an Uneven Bite Mean I Need Crowns or Braces?
Not automatically. Permanent bite changes are not routine treatment for TMD. The specific diagnosis, expected benefit, alternatives and risks must be clear.
What If My Jaw Gets Stuck?
Seek prompt examination for a new locked jaw or a significant change in opening. Do not force it. Major trauma, breathing or swallowing difficulty, or significant swelling with fever needs urgent care.
Can Jaw Pain and Sleep Problems Be Related?
They can coexist and may influence the consultation. Tell us about snoring, witnessed breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness so these can be considered separately.
