What Does Aligner Treatment Involve?

Select a component to see what it does. Your plan may involve more than the clear trays alone.

Clear Aligner

A Sequence of Custom Trays

Each tray is shaped for a planned stage of tooth movement. Your clinician sets the wear and change schedule and checks how the teeth respond.

The trays are removable, but consistent wear is essential.

Could Clear Aligners Suit Your Concern?

Suitability depends on the movement needed, gum and tooth health, and your ability to follow the wear schedule.

These descriptions are a starting point, not a treatment decision. We assess available space, tooth positions and how your teeth meet before discussing aligners, braces or other options.

Some bite changes involve tooth position; others involve jaw relationships. More complex movements may need additional components, fixed braces or another approach.

Bring your old retainers and previous records if available. We check what has changed, gum health and whether further movement or a new retention plan is appropriate.

We consider growth, erupting teeth, oral health and readiness to care for an appliance. An early consultation does not automatically mean starting aligners. Explore children’s dentistry.

From a Digital Scan to a Clinical Plan

An iTero™ scan records the teeth in 3D. Your clinician combines this with an examination and any other records needed.

We discuss what you notice, examine the teeth and gums, assess the bite and take appropriate records. A digital scan does not replace the clinical examination or any indicated X-rays.

We explain the goals, alternatives and components your plan may need. A digital preview illustrates a proposed plan; it is not a promise of the final result.

Your clinician checks the fit and explains insertion, removal, cleaning, wear time and when to change trays. Ask for clarification before you leave.

Reviews check how the teeth and aligners are tracking. Additional records, revised instructions or further aligners may be needed. The schedule is individual.

Can Aligners Fit Into Your Day?

Invisalign commonly recommends 20–22 hours of daily wear, including sleep. Follow the specific schedule your clinician prescribes.

Estimated Daily Wear

22 hours

Compare this estimate with the hours prescribed by your clinician.

Remove aligners for meals and follow your clinician’s instructions for drinks and cleaning. Keep the teeth and aligners clean before reinserting them. Use your case when the trays are out, and keep them away from heat.

Plan how you will clean and store the aligners away from home. Discuss contact sport and any mouthguard needs. Ask the clinic what to do if travel disrupts your review or tray-change schedule.

Contact the clinic for advice. Do not decide on your own to skip ahead, force a tray or improvise a replacement. Keep previous trays if your clinician has asked you to.

Finishing the Trays Is Not the End of Care

Teeth can move after active treatment. Your clinician explains the retainer type, wear schedule, cleaning and reviews. Retention is a continuing commitment.

A review may identify movements that need more work. Additional aligners, often called refinements, may form part of the next step. Ask how progress will be assessed and what your proposed plan includes.

Questions Before You Decide

The estimate depends on the starting bite, planned movements, oral health, consistent wear and response during treatment. Your clinician should explain a realistic range after consultation.

You may notice pressure with a new tray and a temporary change in speech. Tell the clinic about persistent pain, sore areas or a tray that does not fit; these need individual advice.

Discuss oral hygiene, decay and gum health, tooth sensitivity, changes to tooth roots and any limits to the planned result. Ask how previous dental work or existing problems affect your own risk and options.

No. Both need appropriate diagnosis, planning and follow-up. Braces can be more suitable for some movements or routines. We explain the alternatives and what each involves before you decide.

Do not assume that straightening teeth will resolve these concerns. They require their own consultation and, where appropriate, coordinated care. Explore jaw pain care or sleep and breathing consultation.
