Practical guidance
What Has Happened?
Choose the situation that best matches what you notice. This guide supports first aid; it does not diagnose the cause or confirm that it is safe to wait.
Toothache
Your Next Step
Arrange dental consultation promptly for severe, worsening or persistent pain, pain disturbing sleep, or pain with fever or swelling.
While Arranging Care
Choose soft foods and avoid chewing on the painful tooth. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief suitable for your age, health and medicines; follow the label and do not exceed the dose.
Tell us when the pain began, what triggers it, whether you have swelling or fever, and what medicines you have taken.
Swelling or Abscess
Your Next Step
Suspected dental infection needs urgent dental examination. Fever, pus or a bad taste may accompany swelling.
While Arranging Care
Use a soft toothbrush and choose soft foods while arranging care. Pain relief is temporary support, not treatment of the infection. Do not try to drain a swelling yourself.
If swelling involves the eye or neck, affects breathing or swallowing, or you have extensive mouth swelling or marked difficulty opening your mouth, seek hospital care immediately.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Your Next Step
Contact a dentist after a tooth breaks. Severe pain, bleeding, looseness or a significant injury needs prompt advice.
While Arranging Care
Keep any tooth fragment in milk or saliva in a container and bring it with you. Avoid biting on the damaged tooth. A dentist will assess whether repair is possible.
Tell us how the injury happened and whether a tooth is loose or displaced. A serious facial injury or heavy uncontrolled bleeding needs hospital care.
Knocked-out Tooth
Your Next Step
Seek an emergency dentist immediately, even if you cannot find the tooth. Do not delay until the next routine appointment.
While Arranging Care
Permanent tooth: hold it by the crown (the white part), not the root. If dirty, rinse gently in milk or saline. If it goes back into its socket easily, replace it and bite gently on a clean cloth. Do not force it. If you cannot replace it, keep it in milk and take it to a dentist immediately.
Baby tooth: never put it back in. If unsure which type it is, keep the tooth in milk and seek immediate dental advice. Tell us the patient’s age and the time of injury.
Bleeding After Care or Injury
Your Next Step
Heavy uncontrolled bleeding, faintness or a serious injury needs immediate medical help.
While Arranging Care
For bleeding from an extraction socket, sit upright, place clean folded gauze over the socket and bite firmly for 30 minutes without repeatedly checking. Follow your treating dentist’s instructions. Do not sleep with gauze in your mouth.
If bleeding continues, contact the treating dentist urgently; do not keep waiting if bleeding is heavy. Tell us about blood-thinning medicines. Do not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice.
Lost Filling or Crown
Your Next Step
Contact the clinic to arrange consultation. Pain, swelling or a new injury makes prompt advice more important.
While Arranging Care
Keep a detached crown safely in a container and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on the affected tooth and gently keep the area clean. Do not use household glue or force a crown into place.
Tell us whether the tooth hurts, whether the crown is loose or fully detached, and when it happened. Ask the dentist about suitable temporary protection.
Hospital warning signs always take priority. Review when to seek hospital care ↑
If We Are Closed or Cannot See You
If you need urgent dental care and we are unavailable, contact another dentist offering urgent appointments. If you have any of the serious warning signs listed above, seek immediate care at the nearest hospital. Do not wait for the clinic to reopen or for a message reply.

What Happens at Your Visit
01
Listen
We ask about the problem, its timing, your medical history and what worries you.
02
Examine
Tooth tests and imaging are used when clinically indicated to help identify the cause.
03
Explain
We discuss findings, uncertainty, options and what needs attention first.
04
Treat or Plan
Appropriate urgent care may begin at the visit. Further treatment or referral may be needed.
Preserve the Tooth When It Is Reasonable
We assess before recommending a procedure. The tooth’s condition, your health and your preferences guide the options. Keeping a tooth may be appropriate, but the outlook and alternatives should be explained.
Care Depends on the Findings
Your plan may include temporary protection or repair, treatment of infection, root canal treatment, tooth removal or referral. Timing, comfort measures and follow-up are discussed individually.

Questions About Urgent Dental Care
Call during clinic hours to check availability before travelling. We cannot guarantee an immediate appointment. If care cannot wait and we cannot see you, seek another urgent dental service.
No. Toothache has several possible causes. Examination and any indicated tests help establish whether repair, root canal treatment, another approach or referral is appropriate.
A dental abscess needs dental treatment of the source. Antibiotics may be used when indicated, but they do not replace appropriate dental care. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay examination because pain eases.
An improvement does not establish that the cause has resolved. Keep your recommended appointment, particularly after swelling, injury or suspected infection.
Tell us about your pain and concerns. Local anaesthesia, appropriate medicines and other comfort measures depend on the diagnosis, your health and the procedure.
Call with your child’s age and the problem so the clinic can advise on availability. A knocked-out baby tooth must not be replanted. Breathing or swallowing difficulty, major injury or heavy bleeding requires immediate hospital care.
Bring a list of medicines and allergies, relevant medical information and any recent dental records. Bring a lost crown or tooth fragment; keep a knocked-out permanent tooth or fragment in milk if it has not been replaced.
