Nervous About Visiting the Dentist?

You can tell the team that you feel nervous before your appointment. You do not need to hide a difficult past experience or know exactly what treatment you need. See what to expect during your patient journey before you attend.

When to Seek Help

If anxiety is making you delay a painful or swollen tooth, contact the clinic and explain both the symptoms and your concerns so the next step can be discussed.

Explain What Feels Difficult

Is it the sound, injections, gagging, pain, feeling rushed or not knowing what will happen? A specific description helps the clinician understand what support you may need.

Agree on a Manageable First Step

Ask what the appointment will involve and whether you can start with discussion and consultation. Agree a signal for a pause and ask for explanations before each stage.

Make a Short Question List

Write down your three main concerns. Ask which care is urgent, what alternatives exist and how the plan can be paced. If fear is severe, discuss suitable additional support or referral. Availability of any particular service should be confirmed with the clinic.

Questions About Your Next Step

Ask for the findings and options to be explained before you decide. If a problem is urgent, ask what delay could mean and what can be done now.

Ask the clinic beforehand about bringing a support person and arrangements for the appointment.
