After Root Canal Treatment: What Happens Next?

Finishing root canal treatment and protecting the tooth are connected stages. Before leaving, check whether you have a temporary filling and what appointment comes next.

When to Seek Help

Contact your dentist if pain is severe, worsening or lasts more than a few days. Report swelling, an uneven bite or a lost temporary filling promptly. Trouble breathing or swallowing requires hospital emergency care.

While Your Mouth Is Numb

Wait until numbness wears off before chewing, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Follow the eating and medicine instructions you were given.

During the First Few Days

Some tenderness can occur as tissues settle. Symptoms should improve. Continue gentle brushing and cleaning as advised. Do not use pain relief to postpone a review if symptoms worsen.

Protect the Tooth Until It Is Restored

A tooth awaiting its final restoration is more vulnerable to fracture. Avoid chewing on it until the dentist has restored it. The appropriate filling or crown depends on remaining tooth structure, position and bite. Keep the restoration appointment even if the tooth feels comfortable.

Make the Next Appointment Clear

Ask: Is the root canal stage complete? Is my filling temporary? What restoration is planned? When should I return? Bring those questions to GardenCity Smiles™, along with any records from treatment elsewhere.

Questions About Your Next Step

No single restoration suits every tooth. Your dentist assesses the remaining structure and chewing forces and explains the protection needed.

Yes. Comfort alone does not establish that the tooth is fully restored or healing as intended. Attend the review advised by your dentist and continue routine oral care.
