Daily oral care habits that can help with bad breath

Where Breath Odour Often Begins

Breath odour commonly begins when bacteria break down debris and proteins on the tongue, around the gumline or between teeth. A dry mouth can make the smell more noticeable because saliva normally helps clear material from the mouth.

Patterns You Can Notice

Notice whether the concern is strongest after waking, during long gaps without food or water, or alongside a coated tongue, dry mouth, bleeding gums, tooth discomfort or a change in taste. These observations are more useful than repeatedly testing your breath or masking it with mints.

What the Smell Cannot Tell You

Odour alone cannot identify its source. Persistent bad breath may relate to oral hygiene, gum disease, tooth problems, dry mouth, tobacco use or a non-dental condition. A dental examination can check common oral sources before medical review is considered.

When the Concern Persists

For warning signs, possible causes and the examination pathway, visit our Bad Breath (Halitosis) concern page. That page is the main clinical guide; this article is limited to understanding where odour may originate.
