TMJ Orthotic Therapy: Is an Appliance Right for You?

An orthotic is a dental splint considered for selected jaw concerns after a consultation. Its purpose, wearing instructions and review plan should be clear before you start.

Start With the Reason for Treatment

Jaw pain, tooth wear and grinding are different concerns. An appliance is one possible part of care, alongside an explanation of your findings and conservative options.

We review your symptoms, examine jaw movement and teeth, and consider relevant health factors. A splint trial may be appropriate in selected cases, with an agreed goal and review.

An appliance may be used for tooth protection. It does not reliably stop grinding, and protecting teeth is different from treating pain.

Painless clicking often needs no treatment. Mention locking, pain or a change in movement during your consultation.

Bring it to your appointment. Tell us how often you use it, what has changed and whether it affects your comfort or bite.

What a Monitored Trial Involves

Discuss the likely source of symptoms, self-management and other appropriate options. Ask what the appliance is intended to achieve and how progress will be judged.

The clinician checks fit and gives individual wearing and cleaning instructions. The appliance should not be intended to permanently change your bite.

Review comfort, symptoms and any bite change. Do not keep using an uncomfortable appliance simply because you expect an adjustment period.

If wearing the appliance increases pain or changes your bite, stop using it and contact the clinician.

Practical Questions

These terms can overlap. Ask about the specific design and intended purpose of the appliance being recommended. Our Splint Therapy guide explains fitting and everyday care.

A reversible appliance should not promise permanent jaw repositioning or justify irreversible bite changes without a separate clinical indication.

The purpose and checks differ. If you have snoring, breathing pauses or CPAP difficulties, use our sleep-care route so we can arrange a suitable consultation.

Discuss Your Jaw Symptoms

Bring any existing splint and describe your pain, locking, grinding or concerns about tooth wear. Consult Dr Deepthi Kalahasti at GardenCity Smiles™.
