FAQs

What is high caries management, and who is at risk?

People who have more than 3 or more cavities fall under the high caries group. Caries risk assessment (CRA) is done considering different variables and grouping the person into low, moderate, or high-risk categories. Bottle feeding in babies and people who have several areas of tooth structure demineralization, the habit of frequent sugar intake, poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth are highly prone to caries.

Nutritional counselling, fluoride treatments, and imparting healthy dental habits by correcting the brushing and flossing techniques are some measures to manage high caries index patients from developing newer cavities

Avoid high sugary and sticky food in your diet. Do not continuously keep snacking on foods or drinks. Rinse your mouth after every meal or snack. Chew on a sugar-free gum to increase the generation of saliva in the mouth which neutralizes the plaque acids.

Fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and restoration of the existing cavities. Regular follow-ups with re-call visits every 3, 6, and 12 months in a year along with re-enforcement of healthy dental habits will prevent the development of new cavities.

The timely intervention and preventive treatment strategies will prevent the need for tooth extraction.
